History of Essex Concrete Corporation

Essex Concrete Corporation was started in 1965 in Tappahannock Virginia by William W. "Billy" Cooke.  Over the past 40 years Essex Concrete Corporation has strived to be a service oriented company. We take extra time and have the commitment to meet the needs of our customers and provide them with high quality products.

Starting with one plant in Tappahannock, 2 employees, and two mixer trucks, we have grown over the years to four plants, over 80 employees, and over 30 mixer trucks. Much of this is due to our dedication and quality service.

In 1979, Aylett Sand & Gravel was established to enhance our capability to produce concrete. We mine mortar sand, concrete sand & different washed gravels. The plant is located in King & Queen County east of Aylett on Route 360.
To increase our area of service, the Rockville Plant was established in 1999 and it has provided better access to our customers in western Richmond and parts south much more effectively. We expanded again in 2004 by purchasing the Bottoms Bridge Plant on Rt 60 in New Kent County and in 2006 we replaced the existing plant with a new state of the art batching plant.

We have become a key producer in areas north, east and west of Richmond. We provide concrete for shopping centers, schools, office buildings as well as subdivisions and residential work.  Even though we are a growing corporation in the Richmond area market, we are still a family owned business and our employees are known by name throughout the company and not by a number.  We try to maintain personal as well as professional relationships with every employee and let them know that they are a vital part of this organization. Our employees emphasize the goal of being a service oriented company.  In doing so, we have become a great team and enjoy working together, helping each other, and helping the customer to meet the needs of the task at hand.
